Heats and start times: how your race day gets its shape
How Hyrox assigns waves and start times, when you actually find out yours, what you can and can't change, and how to plan travel and warm-up around it.
Aug 16, 2026
A Hyrox event isn't one race at one time. It's hundreds of small races going off in waves from morning until evening, often across several days. Until your wave is assigned, "race day" is a range, and for GoodLife HYROX Toronto 2026 that range is October 1 to 4. Here's how the schedule actually takes shape, and what to do at each stage.
How does a Hyrox event day work?
Waves go off at regular intervals through the day, typically every few minutes, with each division racing in its own block. Hyrox's FAQ describes an event day running from roughly 8 am to 9 pm. Singles waves, doubles waves and relay waves are scheduled separately, so a men's open athlete and a mixed doubles pair at the same event can race hours, or days, apart.
When do you find out your start time?
Later than you'd like. For North American events, Hyrox says division wave times are announced about two weeks before the event, and your individual start time arrives about three days out. Practice varies by event and region, so treat your confirmation email and the event page as the source of truth. Two things the organiser is firm on: your ticket must be personalised (your name and details completed) at least two weeks before the event to be assigned a start time at all, and your time is confirmed again at check-in, where it's written visibly on your arm.
How are waves assigned?
You can't pick your slot. What you can do is estimate your finish time when you register: the fastest estimates are seeded into the earliest waves of each division, and athletes who skip the estimate are allocated randomly within their division. Be honest with the estimate. It exists so you race alongside people moving at your pace, and sandbagging it just puts you in traffic.
Doubles pairs share one entry and one start: the rulebook requires both athletes at the start line together, and you run every kilometre together from there.
What can and can't you change?
Very little, officially. Jumping into an earlier or later wave than your assigned time without organiser approval is a disqualification, not a slap on the wrist. Division changes are prohibited outright under Hyrox's North American ticket terms. What can change is the name on an entry, through Hyrox's official name-change process, subject to the ticket's terms and deadlines; our ticket transfer guide walks through how that works for Toronto.
What should you do when your time lands?
Work backwards from it. If you're travelling in, the safe play is booking refundable accommodation for the whole event window and firming plans once your day is confirmed; a Thursday wave and a Sunday wave are very different trips. Hyrox recommends arriving about 90 minutes before your start to get through check-in, warm up and sit the technical briefing without rushing. Time your last proper meal off your wave, not off the event doors opening: a 9 am start and a 6 pm start are different fuelling days entirely.
Then find out who else landed near you. Once start times drop, the most useful question stops being "when do I race" and becomes "who's racing around me". The Toronto 2026 field on AthleteField shows who's in, so the athletes warming up next to you don't have to be strangers.
Quick answers
- When do Hyrox start times come out?
- For North American events, Hyrox says division wave times are announced about two weeks out and your individual start time about three days before the event. Exact timing varies by event, so watch your email and the event page.
- Can I choose my Hyrox start time?
- No. When you register you can estimate your finish time, and the fastest estimates go into the earliest waves of a division. Skip the estimate and you're allocated randomly within your division.
- Can I switch to a different wave on race day?
- Not on your own. Starting in an earlier or later wave than your assigned time without organiser approval is a disqualification under the rulebook.
- Do doubles partners start together?
- Yes. A doubles team starts as a pair in a doubles wave, and the rulebook requires both athletes to be at the start line together.
- Should I book travel before start times are announced?
- Book refundable or wait if you can. A multi-day event means your race could land on any of the event days, and for Toronto 2026 that window is October 1 to 4.
