How to find the right Hyrox doubles partner

Pace compatibility beats friendship. What actually predicts a good doubles race, from the data model behind AthleteField's team time estimates.

Pick for pace, not friendship. Your best friend who runs a minute slower per kilometre is a wonderful human and the wrong doubles partner. We can say that with confidence because we built a team time model on real race data rather than vibes.

What actually decides a doubles time?

The runs. In Hyrox doubles you run all eight kilometres together, which means the team runs at the slower runner's pace, minus a little, because sharing the work leaves both of you fresher than a solo race would. Our estimate model treats team run pace as the slower runner's pace with a small relief factor, and it tracks real results closely. No amount of station strength buys back a big run gap.

How should you split the stations?

Unevenly, on purpose. Stations are where a smart pair claws back time: you can split each one however you like, so the wall ball specialist takes more wall balls and the grip athlete takes more of the farmers carry. This is why complementary strengths beat identical ones. Two athletes with the same radar shape split everything evenly and gain nothing; two opposite shapes cover each other's weak stations.

So what's the checklist?

  • Run pace within about 15 seconds per kilometre of yours. The hard constraint.
  • Opposite station strengths. Compare station by station, not just finish times.
  • Same division intent. Men's, women's or mixed doubles, open or pro, agreed up front.
  • Training hours that overlap. The best-matched stranger you never train with is still a stranger on race day.

How do you actually find this person?

This is the product pitch, so here it is plainly: AthleteField matches Toronto athletes on race results, target times and division, shows both radars station by station, and puts an estimated team time on any pairing so you can see the fit before you commit. When you've found them, you name them as your partner, they confirm, and you show up as a team on the field. If your partner isn't on AthleteField yet, you can invite them and link up when they land.

Quick answers

What matters most in a Hyrox doubles partner?
Run pace compatibility. In doubles you run every kilometre together, so the team moves at the slower runner's pace.
How does doubles work at Hyrox?
Both partners run all eight 1 km runs together and split the work at each station between them.
Should doubles partners have the same strengths?
No. Complementary station strengths help, because you can split each station unevenly. Matched run pace plus opposite station strengths is the strongest pairing.
